What this leaves out

Tax, and anything your contract adds: shift allowances, weekend or holiday premiums, call-out pay. The rules for each place are the legal minimum, and an employer can pay more. In the US, the regular rate for overtime includes most bonuses and commissions, so it can be higher than your base hourly pay.

On a salary rather than an hourly wage? Work out the hourly rate first with the salary to hourly calculator, which does the tax too.

The last column is 10 hours at time and a half. Any currency works the same way: multiply by 1.5.

How to calculate time and a half

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour. Then multiply by the overtime hours: 5 hours at $30 is $150.

For the week, add the regular hours at your normal rate. 40 hours at $20 is $800, plus $150 of overtime, is $950 for 45 hours, an average of $21.11 an hour. Of the $150, $100 is what those hours would have paid anyway and $50 is the premium.

When overtime starts

In the US, federal law counts overtime by the week: hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at no less than one and a half times the regular rate, with no daily limit. California adds daily overtime: over 8 hours in a day at 1.5×, over 12 at double time, and on the seventh day worked in a week, the first 8 hours at 1.5× and the rest at 2×.

In Canada, federally regulated jobs pay 1.5× past 8 hours a day or 40 a week, and Ontario past 44 hours a week. India's labour codes pay twice the rate past 8 hours a day or 48 a week. The UAE pays basic pay plus 25%, and Saudi Arabia the hourly wage plus half the basic hourly wage. The UK has no legal overtime premium: the contract decides, as long as average pay across all hours stays above the minimum wage.

Double time, and other multipliers

Double time is twice the regular rate: $40 an hour on a $20 rate. California pays it past 12 hours in a day, and India pays it on all statutory overtime. Time and a quarter, 1.25×, is the UAE's basic premium. Union contracts and awards set their own, often 1.5× for the first few hours and 2× after.

The calculator's day-by-day mode applies each place's rules for you, so a long Saturday in California splits itself into the hours that pay 1.5× and the ones that pay double.

Salaried workers and the regular rate

In the US, being paid a salary doesn't by itself end overtime. An employee is exempt only if their duties qualify and they're paid at least $684 a week, $35,568 a year; a higher threshold set in 2024 was struck down in court. A salaried employee who isn't exempt is owed time and a half like anyone else.

The rate overtime multiplies is the regular rate, which in the US includes most bonuses and commissions, not only base pay. For a salary, find the hourly rate first: a year's pay over 2,080 hours is the rate for a 40-hour week.

Overtime and tax

Overtime is taxed like any other pay. In the US, a deduction for the years 2025 to 2028 lets you take the premium part of FLSA-required overtime, the extra half, off your taxable income, up to $12,500 a year or $25,000 filing jointly, reduced above $150,000 of income ($300,000 jointly). Social Security and Medicare still apply to all of it.
