Numerology name calculator, with the working shown

Life Path, Mulank, Bhagyank, Expression, Soul Urge and the Lo Shu grid. Both letter systems, because they disagree and most calculators pick one without telling you.

The birth name, traditionally. Not a nickname.
Nothing is sent anywhere. It all runs in your browser.
A to I are 1 to 9, then it repeats. The Western default.
A name or a date first.

Put in a name, a date, or both, then press the button. You get more numbers with both.

What this is, and what it isn’t

Numerology is a tradition, not a science. No date or name predicts anything about anyone, and nothing here should decide something you would want an actual reason for.

It is here because the arithmetic is genuinely interesting, and every other calculator hides it, picks a convention without saying which, and turns the result into flattery. This one shows the working. Read it like a horoscope you enjoy: something to think with, not something to plan around.

How the numbers are worked out

Numerology reduces a date or a name to a single figure by adding its digits until one is left. 17 becomes 1 + 7, which is 8. A name becomes a number by giving every letter a value and adding those. Everything on this page is that one operation, repeated.

Your Life Path comes from your date of birth. Each part is reduced first, then added: a date of 17 July 1996 gives 8 for the day, 7 for the month and 7 for the year, which add to 22. Your Expression, Soul Urge and Personality come from your name, using all the letters, the vowels, and the consonants in turn.

11, 22 and 33 are held rather than reduced, in the traditions that keep them. They are called master numbers, and they carry the character of the number they would have reduced to, at higher intensity: 22 is a 4, 11 is a 2.

Pythagorean and Chaldean, and why they disagree

There are two systems in common use and they give different answers for the same name. Pythagorean assigns A to I the values 1 to 9, then repeats the alphabet. It is the Western default and the one most calculators use silently.

Chaldean is older and uses 1 to 8 only, assigning no letter to 9 because the number is treated as sacred. It also groups letters by sound rather than by alphabetical position, which is why it is the system most Indian practitioners prefer.

Neither is more correct than the other. This calculator ships both and tells you which produced your result, because a number presented without its method is not really a result at all.

Mulank, Bhagyank and the Lo Shu grid

Indian numerology works with two date-based numbers that the Western system does not name. Mulank, the birth number, is simply the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. It is read as day-to-day temperament, the part of you people meet first.

Bhagyank, the destiny number, adds every digit of the full date and reduces it. It is read as the direction of a life rather than the personality living it. Both are usually reduced all the way, without holding master numbers, which is why they can differ from the Life Path shown alongside them.

The Lo Shu grid drops every digit of your birth date into a fixed three by three square. Repeated digits are read as emphasis and missing ones as the work, which makes absence as meaningful as presence. Zeroes have no cell and are not placed.

What the single digits mean

1 is independence and initiative. 2 is cooperation and sensitivity to other people. 3 is expression, humour and a scattered kind of energy. 4 is order, method and follow-through. 5 is change, movement and a low tolerance for being fenced in.

6 is care and responsibility, usually for more than is strictly yours. 7 is depth and scepticism, and a need to understand the mechanism. 8 is authority and material results. 9 is breadth, idealism and the number traditionally associated with endings.

Each one reads the same wherever it lands; what changes is the part of life it is being read against. The same 7 means something slightly different as a Life Path, which is the shape of a life, than as a Personality, which is only the first impression.

not padded out

How is the Life Path number calculated?

Reduce the day, the month and the year to single digits, then add those three and reduce again. For 17 July 1996: the day 17 becomes 8, the month is 7, and 1996 becomes 25 and then 7. Adding 8, 7 and 7 gives 22, which is a master number and so is held rather than reduced to 4.

What is the difference between Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology?

Pythagorean gives A to I the values 1 to 9 and then repeats through the alphabet. Chaldean uses 1 to 8 only, assigns no letter to 9, and groups letters by sound rather than alphabetical order. They give different totals for the same name, and neither is more authoritative than the other. This calculator shows both so you can see the difference.

What are Mulank and Bhagyank?

Mulank is the birth number: the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. Bhagyank is the destiny number: every digit of your full date of birth, added and reduced. Both come from Indian numerology, where Mulank is read as everyday temperament and Bhagyank as the overall direction of a life.

What is a master number in numerology?

11, 22 and 33 are called master numbers and are not reduced to a single digit in the traditions that recognise them. Each carries the character of the number it would have become, at higher intensity: 11 is an amplified 2, 22 an amplified 4, and 33 an amplified 6. 33 is often read simply as 6.

Should I use my birth name or my current name?

Tradition uses the full name as it appears on your birth certificate, including middle names, rather than a nickname, a shortened form or a married name. If you want to see what a name change did, run both and compare. The calculator ignores spaces, hyphens and anything that is not a letter rather than counting them as zero.

What does the Lo Shu grid show?

Every digit of your date of birth is placed in a fixed three by three square. A digit appearing more than once is read as emphasis in that area, and a digit missing entirely is read as something to work on. Zeroes are not placed because the grid has no cell for them. It is the one part of the reading where what is absent matters as much as what is present.

Is numerology scientific?

No. There is no evidence that a date or a name predicts anything about a person. It is a tradition with a long history and some genuinely interesting arithmetic, and this page treats it that way. Read a result as something to think with, not as something to plan around, and do not use it to make a decision you would want an actual reason for.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. No signup, no email wall, and no data leaves your browser: the arithmetic runs entirely on your device. If you share a chart, the link carries the name and date you typed, which is why the page says so beside the share buttons.
